One Shot: RVA Illuminates 2020

A nighttime view across the James River towards downtown Richmond, Virginia.

Every photo involves an element of timing. Sometimes you get lucky with timing, sometimes you can plan it. When I heard about RVA Illuminates, and saw that a full moon was coming up, I thought I’d try combining the two from a vantage point along the Manchester Floodwall. It was a chilly evening, but a chilly evening well-spent!

Technical: Canon 7D Mark II with Tokina ATX 11-16mm f/2.8 @ 11mm and f/6.3, ISO 200. The foreground riprap served as my tripod for pretty slow shutter speeds! 3-exposure HDR image, processed with Aurora HDR 2018 and Adobe Lightroom.

I’ve always believed that the mark of a successful travel photo is that it makes the viewer want to visit that spot. One Shot posts are meant for that purpose: to share a single photo that I think captures a location nicely, and is worth lingering over for a moment. I hope you agree!
